Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GS Review

Posted by GazGuzla On June - 30 - 2008

The Linksys WRT54G and Linksys WRT54GS have been around since 2002. The first 4 versions of the routers had 4 MB Flash, 16 MB RAM, and were two of the first routers capable of flashing Alternative Firmware like Tomato, DD-WRT, and X-Wrt. The GS has “Speed Booster”, a technology that claims to increase bandwidth to 125mbps (provided attached devices can too). Version 5, and all subsequent versions to date changed to the following configuration:

Buffalo WHR-G125 Overview

Posted by GazGuzla On June - 24 - 2008

The Buffalo WHR-G125 was a cost effective, reliable Router. A recent Injunction has halted US Buffalo Router Sales, and its not clear when or if sales will continue. They are becoming harder to find, and the prices have steadily increased. You can still find the WHR-G125 on eBay and Amazon. This router is very stable with its factory firmware, even better with Alternative Firmware. Range is good with a non-replaceable antenna.

Asus WL-500g Premium Overview

Posted by GazGuzla On June - 6 - 2008

The Asus WL-500G Premium offers 2X USB ports and options to add USB Printers and Flash Storage with the factory Firmware. In addition to the external replaceable antenna is an internal inverted antenna. The case is really cool looking, very sturdy, but there have been reports that the soldered connection from the PCB to the external antenna becomes disconnected during shipment. This is a good choice for networking a USB Printer, or adding a flash drive for network storage.

Recommendation – V1 had poor range, V2 is far better, with the newer Platform Chip. I was disappointed that the 2X USB ports were so close together, making it impossible to plug a Flash stick and a USB printer in at the same time. Maybe resolved in V2, doubt it. With the Buffalo Router US Injunction being enforced, this one of the best options out there right now.
