How To Relocate Vista User Folders

Written by TeleCommuter on Jun 2nd, 2008 | Filed under: How To, Vista

For compatibility with Vista’s Start Menu, Indexing, and other helper programs, a default user account has 11 “Special Folders”. These folders are Cyan (Greenish Blue) in color.

Moving user Data to an external partition or drive is a good way to protect your data in the event you need to re-install Vista. There is another important reason. Files and folders that change in size often, like Documents, Downloads, and Videos cause disk fragmentation. When you get fragmentation on the Vista OS Partition, the performance of your system can decrease dramatically over time. A symptom of fragmentation is excessive disk thrashing performing basic functions. You should try to keep the folders and files that fluctuate separate from the OS partition if possible. Here are some suggested steps to move Special Folders.

You Can’t move the Desktop Folder. Always Create a System Restore point in case you need to go back.. Control Panel—>System—->System protection—>Create.

1) Create a New Destination Folder that you want the Special Folders to reside in. In this example we emulate the C:\Users\(Account Name) directory in the Data Partition - D:\Users\(Account Name)

2) Right click on the Special Folder in its current location that you want to move and Select Properties.—–>Location—->Move.

3) A Window will appear asking you to Select a Destination. Find the New Folder, click Select..

4) Add the (Special Folder Name) to the directory path and click Apply. The example would be D:Users\(Account Name)\(Special Folder Name). Click on Move.

4) Answer yes to “Do you want to move all the files from the current location to the new location?”.

Your folders should now be moved. If you use indexing be sure to add the new location.
