Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GS Review
The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS have been around since 2002. The first 4 versions of the routers had 4 MB Flash, 16 MB RAM, and were two of the first routers capable of flashing Alternative Firmware like Tomato, DD-WRT, and X-Wrt. The GS has “Speed Booster”, a technology that claims to increase bandwidth to 125mbps (provided attached devices can too). Version 5, and all subsequent versions to date changed to the following configuration:
- OS to proprietary VxWorks, from the “linux-like” OS’s that support Alternative Firmware
- Flash decreased from 4 MB to 2MB.
The official reasons for doing this were, of course, relationships, financial, and technical. There are several unofficial reasons floating around the net, my opinion is they are trying to stop people from flashing alternative Firmware. Part of it is ego, alternative firmware works better than the factory Linksys Firmware. The other part was likely legitimate, imagine the support people flooded with voided warranty calls and complaints. You can still find versions 1-4, I maintain daily a list of 4+MB Router Links Here.
Latest Versions:
Alternate Firmware supported:
- DD-WRT micro *
- X-Wrt micro *
* Requires running “vxworks killer” process prior to flashing micro versions. Each version has its own procedure. Use the links below:
The best place for questions about flashing is the DD-WRT Forum. After vxworks killer, use the GazGuzla “Installing Tomato, DD-WRT, and X-Wrt Firmware” procedure. Additional Router options can be found on the GazGuzla 4+MB Router List (updated daily).
Recommendaiton: - Not bad for the price, so long as it has DD-WRT micro flashed on it. Best used as a Repeater.
